Huacapu, is a huge umbrella tree that is found throughout the Amazon forest. It grows in the north, in Nicaragua and Panama, but also in the forests of Costa Rica Huacapu can grow up to 25 meters in height and has a trunk of more than 120 cm in diameter.

The bark is often used by various tribes of Amazon: as a remedy for malaria, tuberculosis, hepatitis and rheumatism. In the preparation of remedies, is usually used the inner bark, as the outer is considered too powerful as medicine.

In herbal medicine systems in Ecuador, the bark of huacapu decoction is prepared and used as a remedy for herpes, lung cancer, hepatitis and tuberculosis. It's also used for intestinal parasites and worms, the muscle aches and externally for skin irritations. The bark powder is then used as mush be applied externally for pains in the limbs, kidneys and skin problems.

In Peru, huacapu is used for confusion, hepatitis, herpes, wounds, leishmaniasis, malaria, rheumatism and as a purgative.

Traditional preparation:
The bark of huacapu is usually prepared in infusions and decoctions, except for rheumatism and muscle pain where it is administered as alcoholic tincture. The bark, because of its high tannin content, is also used to dye clothes.
